B2/C1 Level: English for Academic Purposes

This workshop is for students who are more confident in English and may have some experience with writing articles in English. Additionally it is also intended for students who have to prepare and hold presentations in English.

Timetable for the summer courses

The workshop will focus on the following topics:

  • How culture and style impact on academic writing
  • Punctuation
  • How to write a paragraph, a chapter
  • How to write different parts of a thesis
  • How to paraphrase and how to summarise a text
  • Focus on different parts of the writing process
  • Making and countering arguments
  • Compiling a bibliography
  • Avoiding Plagerism

Presentations

  • Opening and Closing a talk
  • Visual Aids
  • Body language
  • Dealing with questions and answers

Aims: At the end of the course you will know how to organize and structure your thesis and a presentation in English. You will have much more confidence, be more concise and clear when writing and presenting in English. Additionally, you will also be able to recognize your typical errors and generally have improved both your style of writing and presentation.

Requirements: In order to get the most out of this course, please take into consideration that this will be a highly active course and you will be expected to prepare work outside of the course. Before the course commences, you will be asked to submit a short statement on a given topic (ca. 200 words). You will also hold a short presentation in English and submit a short paper or review of a book from your scientific field.
