This is an introductory course to social entrepreneurship and planning environmental and social change projects. Participants should have a keen interest in the operation of nonprofit projects.

The course is team and project based. It is not a course for students who look for easy credit points. It requires full commitment to the team and the project. No previous academic knowledge is required. Previous work in a nonprofit context is helpful but not essential.

Course Content

Students will examine case studies of social change organizations, projects and social entrepreneurs who create solutions to society's problems. Case studies wil be selected from a variety of fields (e.g. climate, energy, environment, food, society, economy, education, culture, media and human rights). and different regions. They will be both from small local organizations and multinational enterprises. Case studies will be used to study the relevant issues such as evaluation, financing, Social Return on Investment, scale transferability and sustainability.

On the theoretical level, key concepts from several sciences attempting to explain the emergence of this phenomenom will be discussed such as (instrinsic and extrinsic) motivation, incentive theory, social cohesion and reputation.

Students will develope own concepts for change projects in small teams (defining aims and objectives, analysing needs of the beneficiaries, identifing risks, creating budget, financing change projects, using social media for marketing nonprofit projects, evaulating impacts).

The aim of this course is to empower students to create solutions to society's challenges. This requires equally an understanding of change processes and sociall entrepreneurship at a conceptional level and the ability to develope concepts for own change projects. By the end of the course the students will be familiar with key concepts of social entrepreneurship and how it can be applied in social innovation processes. They will understand the issues involved in planning, financing and evaluating a change procject.
